Settling into cross-country flights usually leads me to pulling out the laptop to work while watching a movie. Recently, that movie was Manchester by the Sea staring Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams. I wasn’t expecting some light-hearted movie. I knew this one carried some weight behind it. What I didn’t know what just how much. Nor to the extent that after the movie I really wanted something to lift my spirits. This movie is a tough one. And I love tough movies. The kinds that suck you in and play with your emotions.
The Plot: Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) returns to his hometown, Manchester by the Sea, after his brother dies and leaves his son, Patrick, in Lee’s care. After returning to care for his nephew Lee is faced with having to deal with his past. A past that separated him and his wife, Randi (Michelle Williams), several years earlier. It involves a house fire that is gut wrenching.
Casey Affleck is an actor I’ve always enjoyed and who’s performance in this just breaks your heart. Michelle Williams has come a long ways from her days on Dawson’s Creek. Man, does that make me sound old. Haha! Anyways, if you’re in the mood to be sucker punched a few times then this is a movie for you. If you’re looking for butterflies and unicorns, then I suggest you keep looking because this is not that kind of movie.
Who else has seen it? What did you think?
